Number of registered new HIV cases falls in Lithuanian this year

The number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in prisons dropped to 20 this year, from 68 a year ago, it said.

The number of new HIV cases in the Alytus correctional facility alone fell to six, from 44 last year.

Simona Banenienė, spokeswoman for the Prison Department, told BNS that the spread of HIV had been reversed through educational activity and preventive measures, such as searches in prisons.

According to the center, a total of 3,100 persons have been diagnosed with HIV in Lithuania and almost every seventh of them has died due to various causes.
