Remigijus Žemaitaitis, the Order and Justice’s current chairman, said, however, that his opponents within the party had failed to gather the necessary quorum for adopting the decisions.

“Yes, (the council’s meeting) took place. Sixty-four members were present and we had a forum. Decisions on all issues were adopted,” Gražulis told BNS on Sunday.

Jūratė Šivickienė, chairwoman of the party’s Šiauliai branch, confirmed to BNS that a quorum had been present.

The council will propose that Paksas be reinstated as chairman during the party’s congress in late September and that he be nominated as the party’s presidential candidate in next May’s election, Gražulis said.

Žemaitaitis, who did not take part in the meeting in Šiauliai, insists that the meeting was illegitimate and says that the party will adopt all decisions during its congress scheduled for September 29.

Paksas, who has been barred from running for either president or national parliament since his impeachment back in 2004, stepped down as the Order and Justice chairman in 2016 and was replaced by Žemaitaitis.
