Over 40 percent Lithuanians would take up arms to defend country in case of war

The majority of those who said they would defend their country included people with higher education, higher income, younger respondents, including school students and university and college students, as well as residents of major cities.

The October survey for the Baltic Institute of Advanced Technology also showed that almost the same number of people would not defend their country in case of a war. Meanwhile 15 percent were undecided.

34.5 percent also said they did not feel safe in Lithuania in today’s situation, and 31.8 percent said they felt safe. Those feeling unsafe mostly included women and respondents over 50.

70.5 percent believe the Lithuanian society is not ready to defend the country. But 48 percent were optimistic about Lithuania’s chances of defending itself with the help of NATO.

The survey by public opinion and research centre Vilmorus was carried out on 3-12 October.
