“The list of topics to be discussed include European security policy issues, regional cooperation and energy in the region,” Deividas Matulionis, an advisor to the prime minister, told BNS ahead of the visit.

“Energy is the top issue. We have to agree on many projects. Support from the Nordic countries is important, too. We will be leading the energy discussion,” he said.

Skvernelis is scheduled to leave for Helsinki on Tuesday evening. Wednesday is the main day of the meeting of the eight Nordic and Baltic prime ministers.

“This is a traditional meeting and we reiterate our emphasis on Nordic-Baltic cooperation as a foreign policy priority. For us, this is the most important regional format,” Matulionis said.

According to the advisor, the program of Skvernelis’ visit includes bilateral meetings with his Danish, Finnish and Norwegian counterparts.

Nordic-Baltic Eight, or NB8, is a regional co-operation format that includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden. The countries have cooperated in various areas and at various political levels on a regular basis since 1992.
