The STT is investigating a government decree from last September which lifted zoning restrictions in the Lithuanian resort town of Druskininkai, suspecting it might have been motivated by private interests.

At the time, a court was hearing a case on illegal 600-square-metre residence in central Druskininkai. The court handed an acquitting verdict because of the government’s decree.

Druskininkai Mayor Ričardas Malinauskas is suspected to be the owner of the property.

STT officers have already questioned Malinauskas and Environment Minister Kęstutis Trečiokas. Both are special witnesses in the investigation, a status usually assigned to individuals whom investigators might suspect of criminal activities, but lack evidence to indict.
