“When you are in the euro area, you have to be more responsible with economic and fiscal policies. It is also of utmost importance for us as before elections there are many temptations, many promises are given, irresponsible conduct prevails, and here we will have established rules that will provide fewer possibilities for politicians to engage in fiscal populism in Lithuania before elections,” said the president in an interview to France24 TV.

On Wednesday, on 23 July, the General Affairs Council meeting will take the final decision allowing Lithuania to adopt the euro as its currency from 1 January 2015. Lithuania will become the 19th EU member state to adopt the euro.
