“It was really a horrible war, just like any war, so it’s very important to pay respect to its victims. Europe does that on 8 May, therefore, I will also pay a visit to Poland where state leaders are set to gather in Westerplatte where the first WWII battle began. And we will lay flowers there. It will be there on 7 May. And in Lithuania on 8 May, I will lay flowers on victims’ graves and this way pay respect to WWII victims,” the president told the national radio LRT on Thursday.
Grybauskaitė has refused to go to Moscow for the end of WWII anniversary, the so-called Victory Day, celebration. Unlike most EU member states, Lithuania has also decided not to even send its ambassador.
On 8 May 1945, Germany signed an act of surrender and this day is marked in Europe as the end of World War Two.
