“Following Monday’s meeting with Mrs. Baltraitienė, I expect that she will be (appointed as agriculture minister). She studied economics at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture. I remember those times when she was the municipal mayor and would determinedly take decisions,” Butkevičius told reporters.

In 2012, Baltraitiene was among candidates to head the Ministry of Educaton and Science, but the president then refused to appoint her.

The prime minister acknowledged the fact that the president had criticized Baltraitienė before but, he added, “the majority of issues were related to the Lithuanian EU Council presidency.” Back then, the president had objections about Baltraitienė’s command of the English language.

In his words, conversations with the president on Baltraitienė’s candidacy have already begun.

Baltraitienė, 56, has a degree in economics from the Lithuanian University of Agriculture (now Aleksandras Stulginskis University). She has worked in parliament since 2005. Previously she was a member of Kėdainiai District Council and held various positions in Kėdainiai.
