Rise in service prices in Lithuania could be due to euro, statistics office says

DELFI / Mindaugas Ažušilis

“There are various reasons. Perhaps this could be in part attributed to the euro adoption, because other countries observed a faster rise in service price after the introduction of the euro,” Nadiežda Alejeva, head of the Price Statistics Department at Statistics Lithuania, said at a news conference on Friday.

An increase in wages was among other reasons for the rise in services prices, she said.

Alejeva said that the changeover to the euro had no effect on prices for goods.

“Changes in goods prices cannot be linked to the euro adoption. We have had much higher fluctuations in goods prices in previous years,” she said.

Prices for 49 out of 100 products monitored in January rose, 34 fell and 17 remained unchanged.

The statistics office releases data on changes in prices for main goods and services on a monthly basis.
