“Consultations are currently underway with the State Security Department as to what information we could declassify. In fact, there is some additional information that is very serious, it concerns what happened before 2010 and it is very sensitive,” Vytautas Bakas, chairman of the Committee on National Security and Defence (NSGK), told reporters after the panel’s meeting on Wednesday.

According to Bakas, that information has to be declassified without compromising Lithuanian special services’ methods and sources.

“We understand that we are in an area where information disclosure can reveal the methods of work and sources of our special services. We need to find a way to ensure that we can give answers to the general public and that we not undermine the ability of our special services to continue their work,” he said.

In the chairman’s words, additional information gathered by the committee and witnesses’ testimonies lead to the conclusion that the information about Bastys that was provided by the State Security Department to Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, is beyond doubt.

“Obviously, if Mr. Bastys were given access to state secrets and if he were today a deputy speaker of the Seimas, this situation would not be in the interests of the state,” he said.
