15,000 Russian soldiers reportedly sent to Ukraine

Moscow continues to deny it is reinforcing pro-Russian separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine with its own regular troops. However, Kiev keeps presenting new evidence of Russian military presence in the territory of Ukraine.

The Committee of Soldiers’ Mothers, an NGO that represents families of Russian servicemen, told AFP agency that there might be 7 to 8 thousand Russian troops deployed in the territory of Ukraine at the moment.

Citing her own estimates, the Committee’s head Valentina Melnikova added that between 10 and 15 thousand troops had been deployed to Ukraine over the past two months.

“Unfortunately, I am convinced I am right,” she told AFP, saying her estimates are based on information from families whose husbands and sons have been sent on drills but then have gone incommunicado.

Military commanders are conducting a secret special operation,” said Melnikova, who is a member of the Russian defence ministry’s public council.
