“Taipei’s mission in Riga has handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the apology of the Chinese Taipei Sports Association of the Deaf for the incident when the anthem of the Soviet Republic of Lithuania was played during the award ceremony after the Lithuanian basketball team won gold at the 2015 World Deaf Basketball Championship in Taiwan,” Kęstutis Vaškelevičius, spokesman for the minister of foreign affairs, told BNS.

According to the diplomat, the mission’s letter states that the mistake was made due to ignorance as the organizers downloaded the anthem from the internet.

“The Chinese Taipei Sports Association of the Deaf apologizes to all the Lithuanian athletes who were presented at the award ceremony and informs that it’s preparing a letter for the Lithuanian Deaf Sport Committee,” Vaškelevičius said.

He also added that Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had handed over to the Taipei mission a disc with Lithuania’s current anthem.

On Sunday, the Lithuanian basketball team beat the US squad in the championship final 80:77.
