Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitienė is to discuss potential support for the dairy sector together with the division chairmen of the Lithuanian Farmers’ Union.

The discussions will primarily focus on financial support for dairy producers, according to the union’s chairman. The creation of a Lithuanian crisis management fund to help farmers in different fields in the event of financial difficulties will also be discussed.

During European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan’s visit to Lithuania, he announced that the European Commission had green-lighted additional support for dairy producers, providing each with up to €15,000. The plan should be prepared soon.

In March, the government decided to offer farmers an additional €18 million in support, which the government will begin paying on 5 May.

It is calculated that dairy producers lost about €75 million in income last year during the global dairy crisis due to low milk prices.
