The annual Vilnius LGBT* festival “Kreivės” opened the week-long festivities that include film screenings, discussions, an art exhibition, poetry readings and other events.

On Thursday, the Russian Drama Theatre in Vilnius is hosting Pride Voices, where famous people and human rights activists will share personal experiences with the fight for equal rights. Some guests who plan to attend include former Icelandic Prime Minister Jonina Leosdottir, European Parliament vice-chairwomen Ulrike Lunacek, Swedish Minister of Culture and Democracy Alice Bah Kuhnke, and others.

The Russian Union has promised to protest the event.

Other days will include international human rights conferences, concerts, film festivals and evening events. The festival’s main event will be the parade for equal rights planned along Gedimino Avenue.

Through the Baltic Pride festival, Lithuania’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual communities will try to increase their social visibility and society’s tolerance, said Vladimiras Simonko, the leader of the Lithuanian Gay League and one of the festival’s organisers.

Baltic Pride is an annual LGBT festival that rotates through the Baltic capitals.
