“We will reject it. If we had enough votes to adopt the amendments, we will have enough of them to reject the veto,” Kirkilas told BNS Lithuania on Friday.

At least 71 votes out of 141 are needed for lawmakers to reject a presidential veto.

“It doesn’t surprise me as the president has always been closer to the right-wing parties. We adopted that law based on the presidential proposal,” Kirkilas said without elaborating on what presidential proposal he had in mind.

The president believes political parties which have not taken part in general elections but having representatives in the parliament have the right to get funding but it has to be done by allocating funds from the next year’s budget, and not by borrowing. Therefore, such amendments should come into force in January, she believes.
