This June, on June 21, people around the world will come together to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY). Lithuanians from across the country will form an enthusiastic part of this global movement.

Millions of people across cultures, ages, and backgrounds have embraced yoga as a simple yet powerful way to enhance well-being and to unite the mind, body, and spirit.

Recognising Yoga’s universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. The draft resolution was proposed by India and was endorsed by a record 177 member states, including Lithuania.

The date was chosen as it is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day represents a symbolic harmony between nature and human wellness and is important in many cultures.

Yoga is much more than exercise. Its core principles – balance, mindfulness, self-awareness, and harmony – offer practical tools for navigating the demands of modern life. Whether it is taking a moment to breathe, managing stress, improving physical fitness, or finding greater focus and calm, yoga helps people cultivate healthier and happier lives.

These values feel especially at home in Lithuania. A country blessed with beautiful forests, lakes, and green spaces, Lithuanians have a strong tradition of enjoying the outdoors and maintaining an active lifestyle. The Lithuanian love for nature, movement, and well-being reflects the same spirit that yoga encourages: living in harmony with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

In fact, in Lithuania, IDY celebrations will be held in Vilnius and in a record 18 municipalities viz. Alytus, Anykščiai, Druskininkai, Joniškis, Jurbarkas, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Kretinga, Marijampolė, Pagėgiai, Palanga, Panevėžys, Šiauliai, Šilalė, Šilutė, Tauragė, Ukmergė, Varėna. This reflects the growing interest and appreciation for yoga among diverse sections of Lithuanian society.

This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing reminds us that well-being is a lifelong journey. Yoga can support people at every stage of life by improving strength, flexibility, balance, and mental wellness. It is an inclusive practice that welcomes everyone – from children and young professionals to seniors seeking to stay active and connected.

As we gather in Vilnius to celebrate International Day of Yoga, we invite everyone – whether you are a long-time practitioner or trying yoga for the very first time – to join us. Together, let us enjoy a day of movement, relaxation, community, and connection, and discover how a few simple practices can make a positive difference in our everyday lives.
