In his words, the delegation en route to Belarus also included MEPs Algirdas Saudargas and Bronis Ropė of Lithuania and German MEP Rebecca Harms.
“We wanted to go to Minsk, meet with representatives of the executive administration and ask them questions about the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant, and visit the Astravyets site after meeting with representatives of a few non-governmental organizations,” Auštrevičius told BNS on Tuesday.
“The response from the Belarusian Embassy to Belgium was that they could not organize the meetings due to shortage of time,” he added.
Auštrevičius said that the MEPs intended to go to Belarus on April 20 and had last week approached Belarusian officials for the possibility.
The MEP delegation received the negative answer from Belarus on Monday.
Lithuania’s government says that the construction of the Astravyets utility is unsafe, while Minsk has been rejecting the accusations.
