Brussels expected to decide on Rail Baltica financing in July

“As the things are now, decisions are due around mid-July. However, those would be the decisions related to the first call. Next February, there will be another call for proposals. The whole Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is worth 11 billion euros. The current call covers 4 billion euros and the call, which will be published next February, will cover the remaining amount,” Arijandas Sliupas told BNS.

RB Rail submitted its application for Rail Baltica’s financing at the end of February. Through the joint venture, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are asking for approximately 620 million euros from the CEF for the first stage of project implementation.

Lithuania has already launched the construction of Rail Baltica’s section between its border with Poland and Kaunas. According to Sliupas, that section should be built by the end of the year.

The European-standard gauge railway, provisionally worth between 3.7 and 5.2 billion euros, will connect Helsinki with Warsaw through Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas and Vilnius and will be extended up to Berlin.
