The conservatives’ leader Gabrielius Landsbergis told BNS the party was limiting itself to three cities only based on readiness of the branches there.
“I voiced an expectation that I would want to see open election (of candidates) in all municipalities, however, based on the readiness and logistics potential of the branches we decided to kick off with three cities and involve all cities in later phases,” said Landsbergis.
The council also agreed on the safeguards to prevent opponents from affecting the election results.
The conservatives decided that, in addition to the party’s members, other persons eligible to run for and vote in elections are adult citizens of Lithuania “living in territories of relevant municipalities, who are not members of any other political party or any other group with political objectives at the time of the election, who register in the party’s electronic election system in advance to declare their approval of the party’s operations and values.”
The opposition conservatives have the second-largest political group of 31 members in Lithuania’s 141-seat parliament. Latest opinion polls found the party second in terms of popularity.
