Last year, the number of drinking water and sewage disposal service users in Lithuania decreased by 6,262, Lithuanian Water Suppliers Association announces.
“As you know, last year 44,500 people emigrated from Lithuania. This, I believe, is one of the main reasons why drinking water demand last year did not grow and remained the same as in 2014,” said Lithuanian Water Suppliers Association president Bronius Miežutavičius.
However, compared to 2014, the number of industrial and other companies among water consumers has increased by a thousand and it has been growing for a number of years.
In Lithuania, 55% of drinking water is consumed by households and 45% by industry, while in most European countries the proportion is reversed.
Good quality drinking water resources in Lithuania is about five times bigger than the current demand, according to Miežutavičius.
While last year an average Lithuanian used 67.5 litres of water a day, or 2 liters more than in 2014, Lithuanians consume relatively little water compared to some other European states where people on average use over 100 litres a day.
