Expats angry at plans to scrap panel for affairs of Lithuanians living abroad

“Elimination of the commission will decrease considerable the communication between the executive administration and the diaspora, and the proposed alternatives will not ensure efficient cooperation,” LWC chairperson Dalia Henke said in a press release.

According to the communique, the termination of the commission is based on “imprecise and misleading argumentation”, which will lead to more bureaucracy, not less.

“Elimination of the commission will have an impact on all citizens of Lithuania and persons of Lithuanian origin, however, they were hardly consulted on the matter. We think that it is vital to hold discussions and find compromise on the best way of organizing the cooperation between Lithuanians abroad and the executive administration before eliminating the commission,” said Henke.

The Foreign Ministry’s draft resolution to scrap the commission came in response to recommendations from Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.

According to the document, the commission is being eliminated to reduce the administrative burden, as the government “closely cooperates with the Lithuanian World Community and holds meetings when needed.”
