No hazard has been reported in Lithuania so far in the wake of the fires in the protection zones next to the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine, the Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) said.

“We have received no official information about increased background radiation or any other risk,” Birutė Kuklytė of VATESI said.

The fire, which broke out in early hours of Saturday, is still being extinguished with special helicopters and airplanes. A total area of 6 hectares of forests and bushes is ablaze in the Chernobyl protection zone, the Ukrainian State Agency of Emergency Situations said.

According to its report, the fire constitutes no danger for objects in the nuclear utility’s protection zone and the background radiation remains normal.
