Health minister’s condition ‘serious’

Juras Požėla
DELFI / Tomas Vinickas

Požela was admitted to Santariškės Clinics in Vilnius last week, according to a source within the Social Democratic Party.

“His condition is rather serious,” he has told DELFI, adding that the minister’s treatment “will take a while”.

Požela has been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas, during his holiday.

The most common causes of acute pancreatitis are gallstones, heavy alcohol use, certain medications, auto-immune disorders.

Depending on the severity of the disease, it could be treated at home, but severe cases require hospitalization and intensive care that can last months and, in extreme cases, end in death.
