“The permanent presence of NATO’s military unit in Lithuania is a very important deterrent, because from now on we will have NATO forces in our country that will be here not only for joint training, but also for immediately joining the collective defense if needed,” Lithuania’s Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas said in a press release.
“Therefore, we must make every effort to ensure that this unit arrives in Lithuania as scheduled and has good conditions to maintain its combat readiness,” he said.
The chief of defense on Thursday visited Rukla to inspect how preparations for hosting allied troops are going.
The deployment of the battalion is expected to begin next year. The Benelux countries, Norway and France are also expected to contribute troops to the German-led unit.
