The campaign, headed by the conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, has collected enough signatures (the required number is 50,000), forcing the Seimas, Lithuanian parliament, consider the bill. Laura Matjošaitytė, deputy chairwoman of the Central Electoral Commission, has confirmed that the petition has enough signatures.
The legislative proposal aims to prohibit the sale of electricity generated at would-be Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania and to prevent the power plant from using the Lithuanian grid for transporting its energy.
Vilnius has been the fiercest critic of the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant project, claiming that Belarus fails to ensure safety at the facility. Minsk rejects criticism, insisting that it will ensure the highest safety standards at the power plant.
