Linkevičius welcomes news of Belyatsky’s release

“Of course it’s a very good move in the right direction. If all political prisoners were released, I think, the dialogue with Belarus would take place in a better and constructive way,” Linkevičius told BNS.

The minister said he did not know the reason for Belyatsky’s release.

“We don’t know all circumstances but the very fact is welcome. (…) I believe it’s not worth making guesses, let’s wait for official explanations,” the Lithuanian foreign minister said.

On Saturday, Belyatsky was unexpectedly freed after spending several years in prison since 2011 when Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko launched a crackdown on opposition.
