Lithuania moves closer to legalizing opposite-sex partnerships

“They will be put before the Seimas. The amendments will legalize the rights of people who live together without being married. It has major significance for children and the weaker partner,” Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis said after the Cabinet sitting.

Asked why the amendments do not provide for same-sex partnership, the minister said: “In that case we would have not had this bill at all.”

While drafting the amendments, the Ministry of Justice also worked with the Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference.

The Ministry of Justice suggests legalizing partnerships between men and women only.

Meanwhile nine Liberal and Social Democratic lawmakers registered a bill in late March, which includes both opposite-sex and same-sex partnerships.
