Lithuania, Poland join forces in crackdown on illegal immigration

On August 14-17 and August 21-24, Lithuanian and Polish border guards as well as police and customs officers set up temporary road blocks on Lithuanian and Polish border roads and inspected 1,454 vehicles and 3,124 persons crossing the border and recorded several attempts to smuggle illegal immigrants.

According to the Lietuvos Rytas daily, in one of the instances, eight illegal immigrants from Vietnam were detained the near Polish border on Friday after they were found hiding inside a tank truck with Estonian car plates.

Figures from the SBGS show that the flow of illegal immigrants from Georgia, seen in recent years, has been slowing down. Meanwhile, the number of incoming Vietnamese citizens is growing. 32 Vietnamese people were detained in Lithuania in the first half of 2013 and the number grew to 55 n the six months of last year and tripled to 158 in the first half of this year.
