Lithuanian parliament endorses new media self-regulation procedure

DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij

The new procedure was backed by 65 MPs, one voted against and six abstained. MPs of the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania did not vote.

Under the adopted amendments, journalist ethics will be evaluated by the Ethics Association for Public Information, which will consist of media representatives only. The Homeland Union had wanted the association to also include representatives of the Bishops’ Conference, the Lithuanian Centre for Human Rights and the Lithuanian Association of Psychiatrists.

The existing Ethics Commission of Journalists and Publishers will be replaced by the new Ethics Association and its established Ethics Commission for Public Information.
