“I can guarantee that we won’t increase the deficit of Sodra’s budget. We are committed to show to people that the authorities take regard of their needs, even if it’s gradual. It’s the duty of the state to increase pensions gradually, but without causing any financial problems in this long-term process,” Algirdas Butkevičius told the Žinių Radijas on Thursday morning.
Sodra had generated excess receipts, which opened up possibilities to increase pensions, he added.
Butkevičius said on Wednesday that pensions might be increased early in 2016.
Meanwhile, Social Security and Labour Minister Algimanta Pabedinskienė told the reporters on Tuesday that the ministry would propose increasing pensions by 6 percent on average, or by 16 euros per pensioner, in the middle of next year. The increase would require 75 million euros from the budget of Sodra, the state social insurance fund, and another 10 million euros from the central government budget.
