The state watchdog says it is no longer advising Belarus, pledging to discuss further participation in the project with European Union (EU) and Lithuanian institutions.

Since 2014, the inspectorate in cooperation with scientists of the Lithuanian Energy Institute and other countries have been participating in a project aimed at assisting Belarus ensure Astravyets safety in accordance to Western standards.

“VATESI is one of the participants of the participants of the project with experience and competences as an institution regulating safety of nuclear energy objects,” the inspectorate said in a comment to BNS.

According to the statement, its participation in the project was based on a stance that the Astravyets construction venue close to Lithuania’s border had been selected wrong.

Following last week’s reports about the Lithuanian Energy Institute advising the Belarusian regulator Gosatomnadzor on Astravyets safety, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry recommended that the scientists should review their stance. The opinion was Tuesday echoed by the Education and Science Ministry.

Some 65 percent of the Lithuanian population regard the Astravyets facility as a security threat, a public opinion poll conducted for BNS has shown.
