“I spoke to the Italian foreign minister about the decision and told him about my regret over this, as there was a lawful and reasonable request on our side for extradition of the suspected citizen,” Linkevičius told BNS in Brussels on Tuesday.

The Lithuanian diplomacy chief raised the issue in Brussels where the two foreign ministers are attending a NATO meeting.

Linkevičius described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the suspect managed to escape from Italy.

Kotlerov, a former Soviet officer from St. Petersburg, was detained at a Milan airport on 13 May under a European arrest warrant after arriving for a celebration of his 50th anniversary. After being imposed a lighter supervision measure, house arrest, he went missing.
