“The new energy strategy envisages four main trends – competitiveness, reliability, sustainable development and innovations. We see the strategy as a document of common understanding, which we will submit for official discussions in the coming weeks,” Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas told BNS.

In his words, the strategy will stipulate energy objectives Lithuania should achieve by 2030 and 2050.

Asked to specify the key challenges, Vaičiunas listed the project of Baltic synchronization with continental Europe, Lithuania’s extensive dependence on electricity imports and absence of consistent policies in the field of renewable energy.

Lithuania’s last energy strategy was approved in 2012. Former energy minister Rokas Masiulis last year gave a green light to the energy strategy guidelines, however, did not submit the final strategy.
