During the visit on Wednesday through Friday, members of the EP Committee on Budget Control will visit the nuclear facility in eastern Lithuania and the parliament, as well as meet with officials of the ministries of Finance and Energy, the EP Information Bureau told BNS.

Headed by German politician Ingeborga Grassles, the delegation will present the results of the visit at a news conference on Friday.

Currently, institutions of the European Union (EU) are opening discussions on the new 2021-2027 budget, as Lithuania’s government aims to secure further funding for Ignalina decommissioning projects.

In line with commitments to the EU, Lithuania brought Ignalina’s first reactor to full stop in 2004, closing the second one in 2009. All decommissioning tasks may take another few decades.

The project has lately been in focus of attention due to suspicions against the utility’s executives of lack of transparency in property sales auctions and politicians’ discussions to remove Nukem, a company operated by Russia‘s nuclear energy giant Rosatom, from the closure projects.
