NATO jets scrambled from Šiauliai over Russian transport plane

Captain Donatas Suchockis, public relations officer at the Lithuanian army‘s Joint Staff, told BNS that the airplane had been flying without an agreed flight plan but was in contact.

“The IL-76 was flying to the Kaliningrad region without a plan but with a transponder switched on and it maintained radio contact,” said Suchockis.

NATO air policing jets guarding the Baltic skies from Šiauliai were last week scrambled twice to identify and accompany Russian military airplanes flying in international air-space close to the Baltic states.
