The new stamp is being released this Saturday in a run of 300,000 copies. It has been designed by Tomas Dragūnas.
“We are starting a news series of postal stamps dedicated to world-famous people who come from Lithuania. We want to remind the world of one of the most influential avant-garde artists, the Lithuanian expat George Mačiūnas,” says Ervinas Vaišnoras of the Lithuanian Post.
“Art critics agree that Mačiūnas’ impact on post-modernism was comparable to Farinetti’s on futurism or Breton’s on surrealism,” he continues.
Geroge (Jurgis) Mačiūnas (1931-1978) was one of the founders of the 1960s Fluxus art movement, an international and interdisciplinary network of artists, poets, composers, and designers noted for experimental syntheses of different artistic media and disciplines.
Mačiūnas was born in Kaunas, but his family fled the country when World War Two broke out. The family eventually arrived in the United States, where Mačiūnas studied architecture, graphic design and music.
