In his words, the LSDP has no opinion of the new formation, as it is a political force “that imagines it would be able to attract and mislead a part of the society under the disguise of the name of the Social Democratic Party.”

“I really doubt they will succeed. People have the right of forming political organizations and parties. And they will probably manage to secure 2,000 members, and the party will probably be established. However, its value and weight will be checked by voters. And about the party’s splitting, I am calm. Therefore, they will probably have to look for the bulk of their party members outside the Social Democratic Party,” Paluckas told BNS on Friday.

Plans to establish a new political force were announced by former LSDP veterans who left the party a few weeks ago, including former PMs Gediminas Kirkilas and Algirdas Butkevičius, as well as MPs Andrius Palionis, Irena Šiaulienė, Juozas Bernatonis, Rimantė Šalašavičiūtė, Rimantas Sinkevicius and Artūras Skardžius.

They left the LSDP without waiting for expulsion on the grounds of disobeying the decision of the party’s council to shift to the opposition.

LSDP has declared to have over 19,000 members.
