“The head of state welcomed the prosecutor office’s efforts to step up the fight against the black market and the fact that a smaller number of prosecutors now investigate even more criminal cases. However, the president underlined that prosecutors should work for justice rather than for good statistics,” Rasa Svetikaitė, the chief presidential advisor on legal affairs, said after the meeting.

Grybauskaitė stressed that the prosecutor’s office, one of the most important law enforcement institutions, must renew itself and become modern, seek quality changes and get rid of seclusion and stagnation in the system.

“The true reputation of the prosecutors can be restored not by fighting for autonomy and privileges but rather by focusing on defending human rights and public interest. The prosecutors must employ the instruments of criminal procedures to protect the state from hostile forces, immediately respond to instigations to violate Lithuania’s sovereignty and respond to actions of anti-constitutional groups,” the president believes.
