Prominent Lithuanian Tatar figure passes away at 91

“We have lost a great person who devoted his life and work for Lithuania and its Tatar community,” Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said in his message of condolences on Wednesday.

Galina Miškinienė, chairwoman of the Vilnius County Tatar community, told BNS that Bairaševskis was the one who pulled the Tatar community together and initiated in 1989 the registration of the Lithuanian Tatar cultural society and spread information about Tatars in the media.

“He promoted, got people acquainted with the nation’s culture, customs and traditions. The memory of him will remain in the heart of every Lithuanian Tatar,” she told BNS.

The figures from the 2011 census showed that 2,700 Tatars lived in Lithuania.
