“I would support the (conservatives’) appeal, as the Seimas appointed him, the Seimas is also responsible for his performance, not just Vaigauskas, as committees were also conducting parliamentary control, therefore, it is this parliament that should evaluate it,” the speaker told journalists at the parliament on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the opposition conservatives initiated a call for Vaigauskas’ removal from the post for failure to ensure smooth operations of the election watchdog.

In Graužinienė’s words, she and people behind the call agree the chief election officer should not be sacked before the second round of parliamentary elections scheduled for October 23, however, the issue should be proposed for parliamentary vote after the date.

She said the new chairman of the Central Electoral Commission should be appointed by the new 2016-2020 parliament.

Vaigauskas has been heading the election watchdog since 1994.

The chairman of the Central Electoral Commission is appointed by the Seimas in a secret ballot after nomination by the parliamentary speaker.
