Transport minister sees possibilities to settle EC fine for railway company

“We may be able to consider a some type of settlement until the last moment, a compromise option. Our proposal would be to rebuild the Renge stretch. We should try all options before we take decisions on how we should behave,” Masiulis told the national radio LRT who is meeting with EC competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager in Brussels on Friday.

In his words, rebuilding the stretch could take up to 18 months, and this would cost Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai around 20 million euros.

Masiulis restated there was “potential” to dispute the fine and the method of calculation.

“Our objective is for Lithuania to have to pay as little as possible in the end, and we may even be able to pay nothing at all, however, this is hardly possible,” said the minister.

Lithuania’s government intends to take a decision on fixing the violation established by the EC by the deadline of Dec. 18.

In Masiulis’ words, the ministry will submit proposals to the government on possible steps and actions after the meeting with Vestager.
