Ahead of an extraordinary session of the Seimas to review the presidential veto of the new Labour Code, the president’s chief adviser Lina Antanavičienė has said the aim of the veto was to protect the most vulnerable groups in society.

She also denied that protesters had influenced the president‘s decision on the Labour Code: “In no way can it be said that the president saw young people protesting outside government buildings and decided to veto it. It was because of what was in the code,“ said Antanavičienė.

Antanavičienė said the President hoped her amendments would be taken into account and incorporated into a revised code.

“The President‘s proposed amendments can be seen as a compromise to reduce the tension in the society. The President vetoed some of the provisions but the amendments could be seen as a compromise step to saving the situation. “
