“We are calling on the VU TSPMI community to take a critical approach to requests by individuals to share information,” the institute said on its Facebook page on Thursday.
“A seemingly accidental contact may mean efforts by the Russian intelligence officer to learn as much as possible about you, your views and weaknesses. The individual may take interest in students’ theses or graduation papers and ask to share material, etc. Let’s be vigilant in protecting ourselves and the state,” it said.
VU TSPMI also posted several photos of the man at the institute’s events, noting that he was the same man whose photo was in the 2017 intelligence report with the caption, “Russian intelligence officers who pretend to be Russian diplomats participate in various academic conferences, other official events and search for potential targets and collect information”.
