Commemoration events began on Sunday, 27 July, with a traditional relay-race from Medininkai to Vilnius. Participants began the relay-race at noon at Medininkai border post next to a memorial. Teams will finish in Antakalnis cemetery, where a piece of sand from Medininkai ground and flowers will be laid on the graves of those who died soon after Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union.
Relay-race winners will be awarded in the Vilnius Palace of Culture, Entertainment and Sports.
The aim of the relay-race is to pay tribute to customs, police and border guard officers who were killed in Medininkai border post. Participants from all over Lithuania gather to take part in the event to commemorate this tragic day for the Lithuanian nation. More than 350 runners registered for the 23rd relay-race. Participants will have to run 35 kilometres from Medininkai to Antakalnis cemetery.
