Lithuania may lose millions of EU funding for projects with Russia

DELFI / Domantas Pipas

The European Union has allocated €16 million for joint cross-border cooperation projects between Lithuania and Russia, but the money will be available only if Lithuania submits an application to the European Commission by the end of June.

EU Ambassador to Russia Vygaudas Ušackas says that €19 million was initially set aside for Lithuanian-Russian cooperation projects. However, Lithuania and Russia failed to agree on funding and co-funding formula and €3 million already lost.

“Cross-border projects have never been the subject of sanctions. The EU aims to maintain bridges and to promote cooperation among peoples,” said Ušackas.

Since 1991, the EU has allocated €150 million for cross-border cooperation projects with the Kaliningrad region.
