“I am happy we had an opportunity to share our insights and future perspectives with the heads of the Latvian and the Estonian governments, both about economy and energy, as well as about international security and illegal migration. Intensive cooperation is crucial in the context of the current geopolitical situation,” Lithuania’s Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said in a comment to BNS.
In his words, the three Baltic prime ministers acknowledged that solidarity was one of the key values of the European Union (EU) in solving the issues of illegal migration from third countries and granting of asylum.
“However, the number of hosted asylum seekers should indeed be set in accordance to the capabilities of individual countries. We hope that the final agreement on transfer of the remaining asylum seekers is achieved by the end of this year. What is most important is fighting causes, not just the consequences in the countries,” the Lithuanian PM said.
In his words, the discussion of the regional geopolitical situation reached a conclusion that Ukraine remains threatened, which is also a threat to the entire European security system.
“We must together enhance the immunity to the Russian propaganda,” he told BNS.
In Butkevičius’ words, joint Baltic projects was one of the key items on the agenda of the informal meeting.
“None of the countries questions its necessity or importance, especially when it comes to the continuing Rail Baltica project and the joint energy market. The LNG terminal in Klaipėda is Lithuania’s specific contribution to regional energy security, we invite Estonia and Latvia to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the terminal to diversify the imports of natural gas,” he added.
On August 23, the three Baltic prime ministers commemorated the 26-year anniversary of the Baltic Way, recalling the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, by which Stalin’s Soviet Union and the Nazi Germany illegally divided Europe and put an end to independence of the three Baltic nations.
