“This is a result of a huge divide between people and the elite politics,” Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said on LRT Radio before leaving for a European Council meeting in Brussels.

She said Britons “voted against the government, against the political elite rather than in favor of anything”.

“These were protest votes,” she said.

Lithuania’s president also pointed to a high level of miscommunication between the political elite and the general public there as playing a key role in the vote to exit the EU.

The EU leaders will meet in Brussels to discuss the situation after Thursday’s British referendum which produced a majority in favour of leaving the 28-member bloc.
