“In its waning months, Obama admin should privately reiterate to Russia that any Baltic incursion would mean war. Not a threat, simply fact,” Brzezinski said in his Twitter feed.
Concerns about the Baltic security were fueled by Russia’s 2014 annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea. Earlier this year, discussions were triggered by US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s remarks he would only defend the Baltic nations after checking whether Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were meeting their commitments.
Moscow maintains it has no intentions of intruding the neighboring countries, accusing NATO of military build-up at Russian borders.
During the Cold War, Brezinski served in the administration of US President Jimmy Carter in 1977-1981.
