Archbishop Gintaras Grušas, president of the Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference, says the Christians from Iraq should stay in Lithuania permanently.

“We will seek permanent residence for the families,” he told journalists in Vilnius on Wednesday.

According to Grušas, three Iraqi families will arrive in Lithuania on Friday, and the fourth will arrive after one of its members recuperates after an illness.

In all, 19 Iraqis are to come to Lithuania. They will be accommodated in Vilnius and taken care of by the communities of Vilnius parishes. They will be taught Lithuanian and acquainted with Lithuania’s culture and traditions.

40 persecuted Christians from Syria also arrived in Lithuania last winter. They were taken care of by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lithuania.
