According to the SIS, a criminal corruption scheme was identified following a lengthy criminal intelligence investigation, involving representatives of the pharmaceutical company and doctors from various medial establishments across the country.

The SIS launched a wide-ranging pre-trial investigation into large-scale bribery and fraudulent bookkeeping. The company offices as well as the suspects’ homes, workplaces and cars were searched as part of the probe.

The representatives of the pharmaceutical company are suspected to have come into agreement with doctors from more that 30 Lithuanian cities and towns that, in exchange for illegal payments, the doctors would recommend their patients to buy products of this specific company and would not recommend similar products produced by rival companies.

According to the SIS, the pharmaceutical company spent around EUR 145,000 last year alone to bribe over 100 doctors who were involved in the criminal scheme.
